5 Signs of Bad Breath and One Solution to Fixing It!

Here is one of my first posts in my DIY in the Country Series! It’s a funny topic, but I’m going for it. 🙂

We all know oral hygiene is imperative to our overall health, and if you didn’t know, you can read up on it by clicking HERE!  It’s easy to talk about good health, but not so easy talking about halitosis…well here I go!

I’ve come up with 5 signs to be aware of that may let you know you have bad breath….but more importantly a quick, easy and cheap solution! A quick note – I am NOT MEDICALLY TRAINED and this post should not be taken for any kind of medical/dental advice. Now back to the topic at hand…

Here are 5 signs that may signal you have bad breath:

  1. You’ve eaten any of the following: onions, garlic, anchovies, tuna
  2. Someone offers you a mint, you say “no thank you” and they immediately let you know that you need it
  3. Your best friend tells you your breath stinks
  4. You can smell your own bad breath
  5. Everyone you talk to plugs their nose when you are speaking to them
  6. You can’t remember the last time you brushed your teeth

Ok, so that was a little tongue in cheek, but did it make you smile? Seriously, flash those pearly whites!

One of the simplest things I make on a weekly basis is my own mouthwash. You’ll find lots of “recipes” out there, but this one is quick, simple and does the trick.

1 cup water (filtered or distilled is preferred)
5 drops tea tree essential oil
5 drops peppermint essential oil
1 tbsp baking soda

That’s it! I put these all in glass mason jar, shake it up before each use and voila!

Here’s the scoop when it comes to the basic ingredients:

Tea tree oil sounded funky to me when I was first learned that this was a staple in many homemade mouthwashes, but if you do the research you’ll see that it is a pretty powerful antifungal used for treating an assortment of infections – and, it’s surprisingly refreshing! Read more about this oil here.

Peppermint essential oil also helps freshen breath while acting as an antimicrobial. It’s cooling and leaves the mouth feeling fresh. Read more about the benefits of peppermint here.

Baking soda is a known ingredient in toothpaste. Just check out any major brand and you’ll see! Baking soda alone can be used with water as an effective mouthwash as it neutralizes acid and helps whiten teeth. Learn more here!

Well there you go! Mix up a batch of this and let me know what you think. Stay tuned for more DIY in the country, we’re just getting started.
